1965 Hallmark Stereophonic Radiogram
This piece has been sold and is no longer available.
This remarkable 1965 Hallmark Stereophonic Radiogram is a true all-in-one entertainment console from the golden era of home audio, combining an all-valve stereo amplifier, an original Garrard AutoSlim stacking turntable and an open reel-to-reel tape recorder within one beautifully presented cabinet. Finished with its original gold and silver sparkle fabric grilles, it is a striking example of 1960s design that was built to be the centrepiece of the room, and still is today.
The sparkle grilles are undoubtedly one of its standout features. Original, intact and full of period glamour, they catch the light beautifully and give this Hallmark an unmistakable sense of occasion. Fabric of this kind is rarely found in such good order, and it has been carefully preserved rather than replaced, retaining the authentic character of the console.
Beneath the lid sits the original Garrard AutoSlim stacking turntable, one of the most celebrated record changers of its era. Garrard was a respected name in British turntable engineering, and the AutoSlim was designed to bring automatic record playing into the family home with style and convenience. Simply load a stack of records onto the spindle and the changer will drop and play each one in turn, allowing hours of uninterrupted listening exactly as these radiograms were intended to be enjoyed.
The turntable has been fitted with a brand new cartridge and stylus, which is one of the most important parts of any vintage record player. A fresh needle tracks the record grooves cleanly and accurately, bringing out clearer detail, fuller sound and smoother playback, while also being gentle on your records. It means you can play your vinyl collection with confidence, knowing your records are being looked after as well as sounding their best.
What makes this Hallmark particularly special is the inclusion of an open reel-to-reel tape recorder, accepting 1/4" tape reels for both playback and recording. The tape recorder has undergone a thorough restoration, including:
- Complete removal of old lubricants, with all new grease and lubrication throughout
- Replacement of all electrolytic capacitors
- Cleaning of the playback and record heads
- Reconditioning of the pinch roller
- Reconditioning of all other idler wheels
The result is smooth, dependable tape transport and clear playback, giving you the rare opportunity to enjoy vintage tape recordings, or make your own, as listeners did back in 1965.
All of this is driven by an all-valve stereophonic amplifier, delivering the warm, rich and full-bodied sound that valve audio is so loved for. There is something truly special about hearing vinyl and tape played in stereo through valves, with a depth and warmth that modern equipment rarely captures.
For those who appreciate genuine mid-century design, the unmistakable glow of valve audio and the charm of analogue formats, this Hallmark offered far more than a conventional record player. With vinyl, reel-to-reel tape and its original sparkle-grille styling, it is a complete piece of 1960s audio history.
