We were born to be ALIVE!

Welcome to 2025, lets go. The year of the Radiogram is here!

Its time to groove, for old times’ sake

Our business model is really taking a turn for the better, we are moving toward selling and restoring rare and bespoke Australian radiograms as a priority.

Let me introduce myself, widely considered as one of the most hardcore Radiogram collectors of this fine country.

I go by the alias, @retraphonics

Ive been collecting Radiograms for over 10 years, some of the more rare and uncommon Aussie made units are now being restored and seeing the light of day. I chose to make this business to give some prize possessions from my collection another chance at life.

Now you have the opportunity to own one.

What we have here is the mighty rare AWA Ballerina B14, super rare they did not make many of these units. I’d be pleasantly surprised to see another one anytime in the near future. This is the only one I’ve ever come across.

This would have to be the oldest one in my collection to date, this model was built in Australia In 1961, that’s right. This fine piece of craftsmanship is 64 years old.

It was actually one of the first radiograms made in Australia that offered Stereophonic sound reproduction, with that being said they were pretty proud to offer that. They had the word Stereophonic plastered along the front panel in a beautiful purple aluminium strip.

So why is this unit called the Ballerina?

Well, AWA designed this stunning unit with the inspiration from  Carlotta Edward’s famous painting called The Waltz or La Valse. A gorgeous painting portraying 19 Ballerina’s in situ. Paying closer attention to the detail of this design the legs of the cabinet are actually constructed to look exactly like a Ballerina’s leg. The bottom of the legs really do look like a Ballerina’s shoes. AMAZING!

Touching base more so on the design of the overall cabinet, its a mid-century whirl wind of a thing. To identify a Mid century Radiogram is quite easy, they were all made at about 1 metre in length and were accompanied by stunning wooden legs that went to the floor. This unit is a true to the bone Mid century unit. Not to mention the plywood construction of the cabinet and loads of brushed aluminium facia panels, it radiates vintage high quality construction. We chose to leave the original varnish on the cabinet to keep its originality. No manipulation here.

As always this is probably the most important paragraph to digest, we restore all of out radiograms back to completely original condition. The turntable, amplifier and speakers are the original artefact. We rebuild everything to keep it completely original.

True to the era of 1961 this unit is fitted with a stunning BSR UA14 turntable made in the U.K, the brits had superior turntable designs and we as a country chose to utilise English made turntables in virtually every single radiogram produced in the country.

Why do you rebuild the old record players in these radiograms?

Well, because they stack records, 1 after the other after the other!

Thats right you can grab up to 10 of your favourite records and this record player can play them continuously with the push of 1 button. Absolutely revolutionary engineering, an automatic record changer playing records consistently. CRAZY!

To keep you interested I’ll quickly explain what we do to the internals of the record player. We spend hours upon hours of rebuilding them back to new, all new grease and lubricants. The motor is disassembled, all rubber motor mounts and stacking arm grommets replaced. Idler wheel replaced, and to top if off were converted the MONO cartridge to a 2 channel Stereo cartridge and needle of high quality standards. Let’s take a moment to appreciate that this radiogram has never been able to play stereo records until now. Impressive!

While you can’t see the Amplifer I can certainly explain to you what it is, we are working with a valve Amplifer here. 1960’s engineering, beautiful full bodied sound reproduction. This beauty sounds how it looks, vintage! Being 64 years old we have taken the necessary steps to ensure the ORIGINAL amplifier is working perfectly and rebuilt to the original factory specifications. All capacitors have been replaced including electrolytic and coupling wax/ paper caps. In cabin light bulbs replaced, and all potentiometers and switches have been sonic cleaned. Now back to new and sounding superb. Oh and we replaced the power cable with a brand new one to suit modern applications. Big tick of approval.

Okay, so you can talk the talk but how does it perform?

Well, it sounds absolutely perfect. It’s hard to let these babies go when they sound this good. I cannot put into words how good it sounds, I guess you’ll have to hear it yourself to experience the audio bliss. It is very loud for how small it is, maybe we have to shine some light on the full range Plessey Rola alnico magnet speakers. They truly are a force to be reckoned with.

Be sure to venture on over to our instagram page to hear some videos of this stunner in action, we offer an addition adapter cable to play your smartphone or laptop through this unit. How convenient?! Extra costs for this cable.

I took it upon myself to play a very special live recorded track from the Dire Straits through my laptop through this unit for my Instagram fans. Hands down the best performance I’ve ever witnessed in Sydney Australia, Dire Straits did their last performance in 1986. I chose to play their song ‘One Every Street’ what a ride that was. Music was better back then.

Backed by our 3 month warranty its a true candidate for a vinyl lover who appreciates mid-century design and good sounding music.

Play music the right way!
