All aboard the General electric express,

Stopping all stations! First stop; Retraphonics HQ on the Gold Coast for an extensive restoration from the ground up.

Thank god you’re here, the Scandia lowboy is complete and ready for its new forever home. Welcome to the year 2025, we haven’t quite inhabited mars just yet but hey these out of this world radiograms are still somehow in rotation.

The ever so popular Ge Scandia Console Radiogram / Stereogram

Hats off to the good people at General Electric Kirby way back in 1969 when these monstrosities were engineered and manufactured in Sydney Australia.

I can remember when these were first released, the salesman at boutique furniture stores around Sydney could barely wrap their heads around the concept of these exotic animals. Transistor radio’s weren’t even in full circulation at this point in Australia. A fiercely loud sounding radiogram with such low energy consumption?! These were widely know as extremely ahead of their time and still in this day they are just exactly that.

This radiogram is a fine example of the absolute peak of Australian goods manufacturing and productivity. Let’s go back to the middle of the 19th century for a moment, we were a new country welcoming by the boat load quite allot of immigrants and a result of that gave us some of the best brains from across the seas. International engineering was the backbone of General Electric Sydney.

I can confidently say that my photography skills do not do this radiogram its justice. To see this alpha male in the flesh is a sight to see, you’ll find yourself in a daze for hours. It presents itself in amazing if not immaculate condition. If you spend a day down at Retraphonics you’ll be sure to hear the ever so common phrase thrown around our workshop “ its practically brand new “

As always we restore all of our radiogram’s back to original condition in every single aspect, we rebuild the original record player, Amplifer, speakers and cabinet. No manipulation here, you’re simply investing in an original radiogram that has been restored the right way.

The Turntable is a BSR import from the U.K which was installed into virtually every radiogram that Australia produced. It’ll effortlessly stacks up to 10 records and play them one after the other simultaneously. All thanks to us it is FULLY rebuilt and working in as new condition with the upgraded brand new high compliance ceramic cartridge and stylus (needle)

The original GE solid state amplifier has received the standard treatment, all electrolytic capacitors have been replaced, all potentiometers and switches have been sonic cleaned and to top it off we even installed a brand new power cable.

It goes without being said, we have restored the entire woodworks of the cabinet bringing it back to its original teak wood HMR veneer and nourishing it to its best possible appearance. Many hours and endless amounts of elbow grease have been applied to this unit.

To cut it right down to raw facts, I was a qualified cabinet maker for 11 years in NSW in the late 90’s through to the early 2000’s and you could NOT have a cabinet crafted to these standards for the asking price of this unit today. Its simply word class fine furnishing with a generous amount of solid timber. A mid-century dreamboat with craftsmanship that was only seen this good in the 1950’s / 60’s

If you find yourself lucky enough to hear this unit you’ll appreciate its genuine vintage radiogram sound, complimented by the ceramic cartridge and full range Aussie ROLA loudspeakers its an honour to experience such a historical beast in its original glory. After all ROLA were the only Australia speaker manufacturers to offer a lifetime guarantee on its products. How cool is that?!

We offer shipping Australia wide, we also offer 3 months warranty on our units.

Viewing times available on the Gold Coast in our showroom, reach out to make a booking.
