HMV Caprice Radiogram
Aloha!
Hold onto your chair, we have a winner.
The big restoration on this little guy is finally complete, it has turned out fabulous. All works carried out by us in house at our Gold Coast warehouse. Thus accompanied by a 3 month warranty.
Come with us (Retraphonics) back to 1965, the year we all voted to change to the constitution. Also If I remember correctly the postcode system was also introduced throughout Australia. Our tight nit country town was given the unique postage code 2333 :)
Better yet His Master’s Voice (HMV) continued production of these majestic little radiograms the HMV Caprice. In fact this radiogram takes the cake for the longest production of a single model in the whole of Australia at the time, the Caprice N3-4Y/N3-43 was produced from 1961 through till 1969.
Driving this unit is a superbly engineered valve amplifier comprising of four valves, the 6AN7 frequency convertor, The 6N8 RF/IF Stage or as I call it the “Radio~Tube” and two mighty pentode & triode Power/ audio output tubes the 6GW8’s. All radiograms built in Australia in the 60’s most likely had a similar arrangement, if you’re lucky which in this case we are, the radiogram had 6GW8 tubes. Beautiful rich present sound reproduction.
We have cleaned the amplifier internally and restored the electronics, replacing all electrolytic capacitors with brand new high quality replacements. We have also replaced all of the coupling polyester capacitors with high quality reputable replacements. All valves have received a deep cleaning treatment including the valve pins and the in-depth cleaning of all 4 valve sockets resulting in the replacement of 1 valve socket. All potentiometers have been sonic cleaned and the switches also received the same treatment. A unit being almost 60 years old needs this kind of attention to ensure safe and extended use guarenteed. We take pride in our work and price all of our units accordingly.
As per the usual account for Aussie radiograms there is an English made stacking turntable, for the youngsters out there you probably have never seen one. As for us oldies, you most likely will remember them. Riveting cutting edge design, the turntable can stack up to 10 LP’s or singles and play them simultaneously one after the other. The mighty BSR, Birmingham Sound Reproduction. Now Obsolete, these convenient user friendly turntables are magnificent. We at Retraphonics restore them thoroughly, completely dissassembled cleaned and re oiled and back to new working order. Complimented with a brand new high quality Ceramic cartridge and stylus.
If you’re looking for a beautiful sounding mid century vintage Radiogram, look no further then this HMV Caprice. Such a genuine sound, and a gorgeous cabinet. It was also featured in Australia Post’s 2024 Retro Audio Stamp run with photos from the lovely Melissa Webb.
Local buyers we welcome you to auction this charm in our Gold Coast Showroom, appointment only.
Interstate shipping is available. We can organise everything :)
