Philips Bi Ampli Stereogram

We thought we would start the year off with a unique little number, the Phillips Bi-Ampli Stereogram.
A word we are commonly throwing around which is becoming more and more accurate as the years go on….

This one is certainly one for the books, imported from Holland in 1961 they were a special order only and not available for purchase off the shelf at any department stores. Indeed a very special (financially equip) person could afford one of these in the 60’s as they came with a very hefty price tag and for good reason.
Given credit where its due this is a true piece of history, an exceptional furniture piece and a very high quality electrical monstrosity lies behind the glass panel.
Restored by us @retraphonics in our warehouse on the Gold Coast, an in-depth amount of patience and care is taken to carefully bring these unique artefacts back to working order. We are over the moon at how this prestigious radiogram has turned out!
Like me, most of you would remember the large variety of Radio/ Stereograms available from a number of different brands in the 60’s and 70’s in Australia. Department stores such as Myer and George’s had quite the selection of Australian made radiograms. Which means a truly unique young gentleman with deep pockets would have to prove his finances to order one of these from Holland in the 60’s.
Behind the huge beautiful glass display is a world class valve amplifier built in Holland housing 10 valves (Tubes) your standard Aussie radiogram has between 4-6 valves. A much more sophisticated design used in these Phillips proves their superior quality. We have replaced a generous amount of components on the chassis to name a few; all wax coupling capacitors have been replaced with high quality polyester HV capacitors.
All electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with high quality equivalents. In cabin light bulbs have been replaced with new ones. We have also replaced the speaker transformer capacitors with polyester AMBER capacitors for improved sound quality.
This Radiogram has a very strong AM stage presenting you with a sound selection of local SW or MW Radio stations for your listening pleasure. There is also a Valve which is visible through the front glass panel that lights up Green when a Radio station is in orbit. They call this the Magic Eye Tuning Indicator!
As promised, Phillips present this Radiogram to you in a whole wallet experience. They made everything for this unit ‘in-house’ including the Turntable and what a ripper it is! It is a fully automatic stacking turntable, simply load up to 10 albums or singles to the centre spindle and press play and it’ll play each record one after the other continuously. An obsolete work of mechanical art that is simply not available anymore. We have cleaned and re lubricated the entire turntable resulting in smooth flawless playback. Not to mention we have upgraded the cartridge and stylus to a brand new HC modern ceramic variant.
Lastly it fires out Stereophonic sound through each side of the cabinet! Horizontal firing full range Phillips loudspeakers with impressive Alnico magnets. 60 years on they’re still fit as a fiddle and sounding amazing to say the least. These are the only loudspeaker of their kind and the only Loudspeaker ever produced at 800ohms impedance. The speakers alone are worth the asking price if not more!
If you’re wondering how it sounds you’ll truly never know unless you hear it in person, it has been a heartfelt pleasure to witness such an exotic charmer sing songs in its restored glory. This is certainly the single unit I have auditioned for the longest amount of time after the works were compete. I have trusted it with the most treasured vinyl. The sound is extremely loud and with the HF filter it delivers ear piercing High frequencies. Even the most critical of listeners will be left speechless at the sound quality.
For bespoke art/ audio and or vinyl collector this is one to be appreciated and forever loved.
