Enquire About This Piece
Dated 4 February 1966, this beautiful HMV Caprice is an early-production example from the very first run of the model. Finished in a stunning deep walnut veneer, it is a particularly appealing example of Australian mid-century audio design, combining beautifully preserved cabinetry with its original BSR stacking turntable, AM radio and speaker system.
The deep walnut cabinetry is undoubtedly one of its standout features, with rich timber grain, beautiful proportions and original detailing that give this Caprice its distinctive 1960s appeal. Naturally, having been manufactured 60 years ago, there are some scratches and signs of age across the veneer. These are purely cosmetic and do little to detract from its overall presentation. The cabinet remains in beautiful condition for its age, with its original character and finish carefully preserved rather than unnecessarily altered.
Housed beneath the lid is the original BSR automatic stacking turntable, presented in immaculate condition. Designed to play multiple records in succession, this clever mechanism was one of the great conveniences of home audio during the 1960s and remains a fantastic feature to enjoy today. The turntable has undergone a comprehensive mechanical restoration, including servicing the motor, drive system, idler wheel, centre bearing and automatic record-changing mechanism. Old lubricants have been removed, moving components cleaned and lubricated, and the playback speeds, tracking and automatic functions carefully checked to ensure smooth and dependable operation.
The original amplifier has received equally thorough attention, with ageing electronic components assessed and replaced where required, including electrolytic capacitors, resistors and other components that can deteriorate over time. The power supply, internal wiring and electrical connections have been inspected, while switches, controls and potentiometers have been cleaned and serviced. The amplifier has been carefully tested to ensure the original speaker system performs as intended, retaining the sound and character of the Caprice while providing greater reliability for everyday listening.
Alongside its beautifully operating turntable, the original AM radio delivers crisp, clear reception, adding another dimension to the listening experience. There is something wonderful about having both vinyl playback and traditional radio housed within one beautifully crafted piece of furniture, exactly as these radiograms were designed to be enjoyed.
What makes this particular Caprice especially desirable is its early February 1966 production date, the remarkable condition of its original BSR turntable and the rich walnut cabinetry that has retained so much of its original beauty. The combination of carefully restored electronics and authentic 1960s design makes it as enjoyable to listen to as it is to admire.
For those who appreciate original mid-century furniture, the unmistakable sound of vinyl and the craftsmanship of Australian-made audio equipment, this HMV Caprice offers something far more interesting than a conventional modern record player. It is a beautifully preserved piece of 1960s history, ready to be enjoyed all over again.
