Enquire About This Piece

This rare 1978 Sharp SG-400H is a remarkable late-70s table top stereo music centre, and one you simply won't find on Australian shores. The model was never imported or sold here in the 1970s, making this Japanese-market example a genuinely uncommon find for collectors and lovers of vintage audio.

The beauty of a music centre is that every part of your listening comes together in one place. Turntable, cassette deck and AM/FM tuner are all built into a single striking unit, with no separate components or tangle of cables, and the whole system runs from just one power cable. It is a substantial, impressive piece that makes a real statement in any room.

Imported from Japan, the SG-400H has been fully serviced and overhauled in-house at our Gold Coast workshop, and is now working perfectly with no faults present.

The belt drive turntable has been restored with fresh lubrication, a new drive belt and a brand new cartridge and stylus, delivering clean, crisp and dependable vinyl playback. For those wanting to take its performance even further, we can supply an Audio Technica AT3600L cartridge and stylus upgrade on request.

The cassette deck is a fantastic example of 1970s Japanese engineering, featuring VU meters and chrome tape compatibility. The tape path has been cleaned and demagnetised, and it performs like new, with tapes sounding beautifully crisp and clear on this model.

The AM/FM stereo tuner is a real highlight and was quite sophisticated for its time. It picks up stations with ease, and features a lovely tuner command panel with touch pad buttons and a VU meter for tuning strength.

To complete the system, the SG-400H is now paired with a set of hand-sourced Grundig hi-fi two-way bookshelf speakers. Beautifully built in Germany, they complement the look of the music centre perfectly and deliver a rich, detailed sound that brings the whole system to life. Speaker cables are included, with 5+ metres of cable available fitted with the correct euro plugs.

Your phone can also be played through the system, with an iPhone playback cable available at additional cost.

As you would expect from a piece of this age, there are some signs of its history. The lid is undamaged with only light scratches, and there is a crack to one corner on the right-hand side of the body, which occurred in freight from Japan. This is cosmetic and does not affect the operation of the unit.

Altogether, this is a system that sounds really, really good. Crisp vinyl playback, a prime tape deck, an excellent tuner and a beautifully matched pair of Grundig speakers make the SG-400H as enjoyable to listen to as it is to look at.
