Secure one of the most loved Australian radiograms of the 1960s before it comes through our workshop. Produced between approximately 1960 and 1966, the HMV Caprice is a beautiful example of Australian mid-century audio design, combining elegant cabinetry with its original BSR stacking turntable, AM radio and speaker system.

This Caprice is finished in the same rich, deep walnut veneer and original speaker fabric pictured, giving it the distinctive 1960s character the model is so admired for. The timber grain, proportions and original detailing make it as much a piece of furniture as it is an audio system. As an original vintage piece, some light signs of age are to be expected, and the cabinet's original character and finish will be carefully preserved rather than unnecessarily altered.

Housed beneath the lid is the original BSR automatic stacking turntable. Designed to play multiple records in succession, this clever mechanism was one of the great conveniences of home audio in the 1960s and remains a fantastic feature to enjoy today. As part of its restoration, the turntable will undergo a comprehensive mechanical service, including the motor, drive system, idler wheel, centre bearing and automatic record-changing mechanism. Old lubricants will be removed, moving components cleaned and lubricated, and the playback speeds, tracking and automatic functions carefully checked to ensure smooth and dependable operation.

The original amplifier will receive equally thorough attention, with ageing electronic components assessed and replaced where required, including electrolytic capacitors, resistors and other components that deteriorate over time. The power supply, internal wiring and electrical connections will be inspected, while switches, controls and potentiometers are cleaned and serviced. The amplifier will then be carefully tested to ensure the original speaker system performs as intended, retaining the sound and character of the Caprice while providing greater reliability for everyday listening.

Alongside the turntable, the original AM radio adds another dimension to the listening experience. There is something wonderful about having both vinyl playback and traditional radio housed within one beautifully crafted piece of furniture, exactly as these radiograms were designed to be enjoyed.

For those wanting modern convenience, our optional Phone Adaptor Kit allows you to play Spotify and other audio from your phone straight through the radiogram's original amplifier and speakers.

Restoration is generally completed within approximately 30–90 days. Once your pre-order is placed, we'll confirm the expected completion timeframe for your Caprice and keep you in the loop with updates as it comes through the workshop.

For those who appreciate original mid-century furniture, the unmistakable sound of vinyl and the craftsmanship of Australian-made audio equipment, the HMV Caprice offers something far more interesting than a conventional modern record player. It is a beautifully preserved piece of 1960s history, soon to be ready to enjoy all over again.

Once complete, it will be available for collection from our Gold Coast workshop, with specialised Australia-wide freight available.
